Music Director Vacancy

Jubilate Singers is a well established SATB chamber choir, with experienced singers, situated in Christchurch, Canterbury.

We are looking for a new Music Director who will be responsible for the musical leadership and artistic direction of the Choir. Candidates should hold a degree in music or equivalent work experience in the field, and have a passion for choral singing plus the drive to take the choir into the future.

We are an auditioned choir of around 34 voices and rehearse on Monday nights at St Andrews College, with additional rehearsals during concert week. We perform 3-4 concerts throughout the year to paying audiences, as either a capella, or with piano/organ accompaniment or smaller instrumental ensemble. In addition the choir performs smaller concerts for charity and tours from time to time. The choir is noted for its imaginative and innovative performances, including premiering new works. It also participates in community choral festivals from time to time. Concerts are usually on Saturday evenings or Sunday afternoons.

The role begins in 2020 however planning the concert programme for that year, should begin on appointment. The successful applicant reports to the Choir Executive committee, working alongside the Publicity and Music Repertoire sub committees, Treasurer, Librarian, and singing choir members.

Applicants will be invited to rehearse a prepared piece before the choir.

Key skills / duties:

Direct/conduct choir’s regular rehearsals and workshops, focussing on improving performing standards and vocal technique.

Direct/conduct full rehearsals including instrumental ensembles and soloists as required.

Make recommendations for programmes, concert repertoire and suitable artists, soloists, instrumental ensembles and accompanists. Focus on broadening choir repertoire, performance opportunities and explore new possibilities for choral performances.

Provide motivation and encouragement to choir.

Hold auditions.

Co-ordinate extra singers when needed.

Provide ‘chorus master’ duties for outside engagements.

Assist with publicity, media campaigns and promoting the choir.

Network with other Music Directors and performing arts groups.
